China's mills are conserving energy.      [2018-03-14]

China’s steel producers like Baotou Steel are using data to make gains in productivity. Besides, they are installing smart meters and other sensors to cut their CO2 emissions and reduce wasted energy. Many plants generate a lot of their own electricity using the gas from their furnaces and rolling processes. However, most use large amounts of power from the grid, which they are always looking to reduce. Different steel grades need different amounts of energy and sensors are now able to measure exactly which grades of steel are the most energy intensive. Mills can then analyze energy pricing to position certain grades in the production line so that they are manufactured when power is cheapest. The picture above shows monitoring data in the main control room at Baotou Steel.
